Solutions for Detecting Unintended Proximity to Energized Equipment

Leaders: Christhian Henrique Gomes Fonseca

How can we use tools, equipment, and technologies to detect and prevent unauthorized approach to energized equipment in substations and power plants, promoting greater safety for operation and maintenance activities?

Challenge Overview

This challenge seeks innovative solutions capable of detecting unauthorized or unsafe approaches by personnel to critical areas near energized equipment or work zones that have not been released for maintenance activities.

The proposed solution may leverage sensors, cameras, wearable devices, or advanced detection technologies to continuously monitor risk zones and provide real-time alerts whenever safety boundaries are breached.

The objective is to enhance worker safety, prevent incidents involving energized assets, and strengthen operational reliability while maintaining compliance with applicable safety regulations and operational procedures.

Mandatory Requirements

  • Real-Time Monitoring: Ability to continuously monitor and detect personnel approaching critical areas in real time.
  • Alert Integration: Integration with audible and/or visual warning systems to notify personnel of potential hazards.
  • Industrial-Grade Protection: Compatibility with industrial environments and exposure to weather conditions, with a minimum protection rating of IP65.
  • Non-Intrusive Operation: The solution must operate without causing any impact or interference to energized equipment.

Business Impact

The implementation of a proximity detection solution will reduce the risk of accidents involving energized equipment, creating a safer and more efficient working environment.

In addition, the solution will strengthen compliance with occupational safety regulations, reduce operational risks, and help prevent interruptions caused by safety incidents.

Expected Benefits

  • Reduction of accidents in substations and power plants.
  • Increased safety for operators and maintenance personnel.
  • Improved operational reliability and reduced costs associated with incidents and accidents.

Submission Deadline

The proposal submission form will remain available until February 2, 2025.
